Medicinal properties of Karppooravalli

In the hustle and bustle of modern life, changing food and lifestyle habits have led to increasing physical ailments and mental stress. Herbal medicine plays a significant role in providing solutions for these issues. One such important herb is Karpooravalli, known for its medicinal properties.

Name Origin:

“Karpooram” signifies fragrance, and “valli” refers to a creeper. Thus, Karpooravalli can be interpreted as a fragrant creeper. The term “valli” also denotes quickness, implying that the plant swiftly cures ailments. Ancient Siddhars compared it to the mythical wish-fulfilling tree, giving it the name Karpooravalli. It is also known as Oomavalli due to its oregano-like aroma.

Cultivation:

Karpooravalli is predominantly found in countries like India and Sri Lanka, particularly in Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Karnataka. In Tamil Nadu, it is cultivated on 2,000 acres in regions like Salem, Athur, Sathyamangalam, and Dindigul. It thrives in well-drained loamy, red, and sandy soils with a pH of 5.5-6.5 and temperatures between 25-35°C.

Plant Structure:

The stems of this plant are covered with tiny hair-like structures. The leaves are thick, soft, and have a bitter and spicy taste along with a distinct aroma. The flowers are blue. The plant can be propagated using four leaves and four-inch stem cuttings.

Medicinal Properties:

Karpooravalli is a potent germicide. Its fragrance repels toxic insects, making it ideal for home cultivation. When grown around coconut trees, it prevents insect infestation. Karpooravalli juice mixed with palm sugar or honey can treat chest congestion and cough in children. This juice also relieves headaches when applied to the affected area. For itching and irritation, apply a paste of Karpooravalli leaves. Washing hair with its juice helps eliminate dandruff and relieve pain and irritation from insect bites, including snake bites.

Rich in Vitamin A, Karpooravalli enhances vision. Applying a paste of its leaves on acne reduces swelling. Its juice alleviates earaches when applied inside the ear and can heal chapped lips and mouth ulcers. It controls the spread of cancer cells. Gargling with a decoction of its leaves helps relieve toothaches and mouth sores. Consuming it treats asthma, cough, throat infections, nasal congestion, constipation, back pain, stress, skin diseases, rashes, and allergies.

Drinking its juice on an empty stomach treats lung infections. Mixing leaf powder with honey and consuming it improves sweat gland function. Eating Karpooravalli seeds daily aids in weight loss. It helps the kidneys and lymphatic system function properly by removing excess salt, fat, and water from the body. It regulates digestion and prevents bowel irritation. Additionally, it reduces menstrual and labor pain. The Omega-6 fatty acids in it relieve joint pain.

Precautions:

The tiny hairs on the leaves may cause irritation or itching on sensitive skin. Pregnant women should avoid using it. Nursing mothers can use it to increase milk supply but should consult a doctor first.
